The word "Bama" (pronounced Bumma) is Guugu Yimithirr and Kuku Yalanji word for 'person'. The Bama way is a 2 day tour which runs along one of Australia's most scenic coastal drives, from Cooya Beach, near Port Douglas, along the Daintre coast through the World Heritage Listed National Park to Cooktown. It brings together 3 well-established Aboriginal-owned and operated tours each offering a different aspect of Aboriginal life and culture.
Tours depart every Wednesday
Day 1 -Your journey of discovery begins with a scenic drive north to Cooya Beach where the Walker brothers teach you how to throw a spear, hunt whilst stalking wildlife, collect shellfish, catch fish, mud-crabs and maybe stingray along one of their beach and mudflat walks. Enjoy homemade damper, tea-coffee. We continue along the Daintree Coast where we cross over the might Daintree River by cable ferry. Our journey takes us through Cape Tribulation where we lunch at Coconut Beach Resort.
After lunch we continue into the World Heritage Daintree National Park, we cross rivers and mountain ranges as we travel the famous 4wd only Bloomfield Track. At Wujal-Wuajl we join the Walker Family on the Bloomfield Falls tour, who share some of their knowledge about thi special and sacred place.
At the end of the track, there is time for a cold beer at the famous Aussie bush pub, The Lions Den Hotel. Overnight accommodation where you can enjoy dinner to the sounds of the Australian bush.
Day 2-Enjoy breakfast before our early morning departure to Cooktown, where we join Aboriginal Elder, Willie Gordon to visit his ancestral rock art sites, set in the stunning countryside high in the hills above Hope Vale-Cooktown.
Here Willie shares the stores behind the art, stories which can only be told by Elder of the Nugal clan. The tour takes you through a dramatic landscape to six rock art sites, including an ancestral Birth Cave and the Reconciliation Cave, an estimated 30 minute bush walk on generally easy terrain. Return to Cooktown for free time to explore this historical township. Our return journey follows the backbone of Australia's Great Dividing Range. You will travel through the spectacular scenery of Far North Queensland's Outback, and the diverse landscape of the Palmer River Goldfield region. Your tour of amazing discovery will come to a close as you are transferred to your accommodation.
